COMPUTER SERVICES
COMMITTEE

The following responsibilities for the Computer Services Committee serve as guidelines for committee operation. These guidelines are subject to change as situations may warrant.

  1. Assign a different person for each segment below, or combine and re-arrange assignments as necessary:
  2. A.  R.I. web master
    B.  Internet, e-mail and e-publication access at RI office
    C.  E-mail forwarding system not including RI office
    D.  Maintain the email hardware and software at RI
    E.  Database management
    F.  Online Supply Store

  3. Research and publicize how computers can help with Team operations and management.
  4. Review electronic documents that Teams are offering to share, together with the Publications Review Committee, and consider the directions we want to be headed with computer systems and information technology in REACT.
  5. Proactively work to establish the goal of an e-mail contact on EVERY Team.

Team / Council Websites

In line with our Board of Directors' wishes to encourage all Teams and Councils to establish their own websites, we have contracted with our web services hosting company, Digital Fortress, to offer websites at the low cost of $5/month ($60 per year) per Team or Council. Due to the low cost, payment must be paid annually in advance by check or credit card.

This offer allows Teams and Councils to establish a web presence using their own "domain name" plus email addresses. Site updates are accomplished via any browser (i.e. Internet Explorer or Netscape) rather than the more complex FTP type programs. The cost of registering the domain name is included in each annual hosting fee if needed. If you already have a domain name registered, the cost remains the same due to the bargain rate of $5/month already in effect. Team/Council Email accounts (limit 5) can be simple alias accounts which are redirected automatically to a designated address, or real accounts which can be accessed with any mail client program or via your web browser.

Editing of the site is done on your computer using common web editing software (not provided by the website hosting company). The Computer Services Committee (CSC) can offer you some help to get a basic "starter" site up and running, and provide some free support via email if you have questions or problems. A list of REACT affiliated webmasters may be accumulated and published if they wish to volunteer or make their services available for a small fee. CSC is not responsible for performing the work and any arrangements you make with such person or company is between you and them. Contact the CSC for more information.

One source of Web Editor software is Download.com where you will find over 250+ software packages with a wide range of features, and with pricing ranging from FREE to several hundred dollars (US). It is the CSC recommendation that editors with visual editing rather than line editing is easier for the beginner webmaster to use.

Most Web Editor software available from this site will allow you to try before you buy, but many of them are totally free of charge. Experiment with different editors and don't get discouraged if one program seems too hard at first. Be sure to save your work frequently, and make backup copies so that if you mess up a page beyond hope, you can simply start over with the backup copy. If you use Front Page, do not use "Front Page only" features without making prior arrangements with the hosting company. You can use it for editing, but the resulting pages tend to be a bit more bulky than that created by most other programs. Newer versions of Microsoft Word and other word processors may have the ability to export documents as HTML documents, but you may still want to clean up the coding using a Web Editor before publishing.

To initiate a request for a Team or Council website, send a detailed message to . Include which Team or Council you are representing, full contact info including email, phone # and mailing address. Don't forget to suggest a domain name, such as www.teamname.org, that you wish to have reserved.

Upon confirmation of your request and verifying with the Team or Council that the order was authorized, arrangements for payment and reservation of the domain name wil be completed. Instructions will be emailed to the designated contact person regarding how to upload and update your new website.

Some of the first Teams and Councils who took advantage of this offer include...

Do you enjoy two-way radio communication?  That is the single, most important prerequisite to membership in an organization with Teams in every state of the United States.  But, it doesn't stop there.  Our name "says" and we "are" an international organization [please visit our Team/Council Contacts page for additional information].
