REACT International joins the world in expressing condolences to all those affected by the tragedies of September 11, 2001.

When SECONDS count...

REACT ... was there.

In emergencies, reliable communications are the lifeline for survival.

REACT International has Memorandum of Understandings with many organizations, including the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) and NOAA. We are a participating member of the National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) to help provide coordinating communications and support to the other members of this organization.

Following is a "brief" summary of only what we have been told is happening in the NYC area as REACT Teams mobilized to help provide support during this disaster. As more information becomes available, we will strive to post it here in a timely manner. Send relevant info or photos to webmaster@reactintl.org

REACT International is registered with Volunteer Match on their website. For more information, click on the logo shown to the right.

Summary Reports filed from Washington, DC Area

General Information...

As more information becomes available, we will post it here and distribute via e-mail. If you have not been receiving regular e-mail announcements from RI Secretary Lee Besing, send him a message to lbesing@reactintl.org and ask to be added. Please identify your REACT affiliation as applicable.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NO LONGER BEING SOLICITED FROM OUTSIDE THE GREATER NY CITY AREA, as of 10/14/2001. Local volunteers are still being accepted, with preferences for licensed Amateur or GMRS operators, but other volunteers can be used as well. Operations are reportedly scaling down.

Please do NOT simply drive to the NYC area without pre-arranging for your help and be given specific assignments or duties prior to arrival.

Prospective volunteers should first send an email to nychelp@reactintl.org.

Please read this report filed September 30th by Lawson Smith, President of Missouri State REACT Council and of Mark Twain REACT C226 to find out more about the conditions under which volunteers will be operating and the type of preparation you should consider before making your offer. Help is needed, but we need flexible volunteers willing to help out where needed. Click Here

REACT Support as of October 15, 2001

From the Greater NYC SATERN ARLO...

Operations in the NYC area are now being scaled back, and volunteers are no longer being sought from outside the Greater New York City area. It is felt that under current requirements, sufficient local volunteers are coming forward to maintain operations. Should this situation change, we will have the webmaster of the RI web site post our announcements here.

We wish to thank all of the many volunteers, both REACT and non-REACT, who have placed their lives on hold while they came to NYC to help out during this terrible disaster.

We encourage you to continue preparing for disaster relief communications by taking the emergency communications courses offered by both REACT International and ARRL.

From the Webmaster...

New photos have been published on the photo page. Please allow for slow downloading, but I did use smaller thumbnail photos with comments to the right. If you click on any photo, you should get a much larger version of the photo in a separate window. Let me know if you find any broken links or links to the wrong photos because I did this late at night and I'm too tired to check them all more than twice. :) - Lee Besing, Webmaster

REACT Support as of October 9, 2001

From the Greater NYC SATERN ARLO...

Let me introduce myself, Carlos Varon, Jeff Schneller's (N2HPO) back-up in coordinating the volunteer effort to cover the 2 shifts (10AM-4PM, 4PM-10PM) presently in place.

We ask that any prospective volunteer NOT to call to the NYC Salvation DHQ or call our cell numbers or pagers, etc.

We ask that they send me an e-mail as I will use that as their file to process my paperwork. Now that the Southern NY State REACT Council has shut down their council level operations over the weekend, the need still remains for those REACT members or other persons who are ham/gmrs radio operators and have some time to donate.

Please bear with us as we may not be able to respond immediately to every e-mail sent. I would like to thank all the REACT Teams, individual members and Amateurs who have assisted and continue to assist on a personal basis.

God Bless America

Thanks

Carlos Varon, K2LCV/WPQN776
